Clay Shirky teaches the theory and practice of social media in Interactive Telecommunications Program, and is a Distinguished Writer in Residence in the Journalism department, both at NYU.
Mr. Shirky is the author of Here Comes Everybody: the Power of Organizing Without Organizations and Cognitive Surplus: Creativity and Generosity in a Connected Age. He is a Fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard, and writes at Shirky.com/weblog.
Clay writes about his list: "Any list of 'thought leaders,' that infelicitous phrase, is going to be idiosyncratic - what I've tried to identify here are people who change the world by helping us look at it in a particular light, or from a particular angle. I concentrated here on individual voices; though there is extraordinary work produced daily on blogs run by commercial enterprises (Slate, Gawker, Foreign Policy) and group blogs with no one dominant member, (BoingBoing, Crooked Timber, 3 Quarks Daily), I was looking here for a single human voice, engaged with the issues of the day."
